Tutorials - Photoshop - Rounded Corners
Posted by:Tony Bob on Oct 03 2006
You must be at least familiar with the basic steps of Photoshop such as creating a new document and using various tools on the tool box.
Create a new document, 400 x 400 pixels
To create a new document, locate the navigation bar found at the top left corner where you will find various links such as file, edit, image, etc. Click on the button file where a drop down menu will be shown, then select new and fill in the display box with 400 pixels in both the width and height input and make sure that the background color is white.

Use marquee tool to make a selection
The marquee tool can be found in the tool box located to the left of your photoshop canvase area and the tool would be on the very top right of the toolbox which looks like a rectangle with a dashed line. Select marquee, then use your mouse and right click and hold it down from one corner to another corner to make the selection large enough.

Create A Channel and Gaussian Blur
To create the actual curve, you need to create a channel to manipulate the corners. To do this, you need to locate your layers pallet and then find the tab that says channels and select that. You will find a find a navigation bar at the bottom of that palette with 4 buttons on it. With your selection still selected from when we used the marquee tool, you will now click on the 2nd from the left left button that looks like a filled in rectangle with a circle cut out. That will create a new channel with only the selection presented that you just made. Now you must locate the navigation bar at the top left and click on the link filter where you will then select blur and then gaussian blur with a radius of 5.0 pixels.

Now you must form your curve with the channel you just made, to do this find the navigation bar at the top left again and click on image and then select and adjustments and then levels or use the shortcut link of:
The tricky part about this next step, is that you will see too triangle things on the left and right of a scale. You must move them both to the middle where you balance each one close to each other in the middle of the scale. When you do this, you are creating a curve. Please alter the placement to your specifications.

Filling in your selection and the result
Now to finalize your selection with rounded corners, you must locate your layers palette again and go back to the layers tablet, create a new layer, and then fill in your selection with a color.
Here is what the final looks like:
